Mets Team Stats
The data presented below is from the
2016 Lahman Baseball Database. I used the Pandas software library
for Python
to manipulate and create time series plots of yearly baseball data for the New York Mets
since they became a team in 1962. This was done as a first try
at analyzing baseball data. Even though the figures (and the methods to generate them)
are fairly simple, some interesting trends found.
Homerun totals have increased significantly for the Mets since 2014 with the team hitting
the most homeruns in 2016. During the 2015 and 2016 seasons, the Mets were relying
heavily on homeruns to win games. In 2016, the Mets were higher than the league average
team homerun total by close to 30 homeruns. Despite this, runs have remained close to average
over 2015 and 2016. This same increase in recent years for homeruns is also seen in strikeouts by
Mets pitching. This trend is consistent throughout baseball as more teams are focusing
on hitting homeruns, through statistics like launch angle and exit velocity. The more players
are swinging for power, the more strikeouts will go up. In recent years
(2014 - 2016), the Mets have been above the league average in total strikeouts. Earned
Run Average is fairly low with years 1968, 1969, and 1988 being some good years for Mets
pitching.
